Introduction

The Guide of names of the UIB gathers the terms in English, Catalan and Spanish. It is presented in the alphabetical order of English terms. The grammatical category of every term has been included, both in the case of common nouns and of proper names. Clarifying notes have been added when deemed necessary for meaning clarification or in order to provide a relevant piece of information

The terms have been chosen using the diagram concept that goes together with this guide. The spellings are those appearing in official documents like FOU, royal decrees or conventions.

Regarding the contents, it must be mentioned that some of the terms are unlikely to change, especially in the case of departments or faculties, as these are strongly consolidated. Some others might be more prone to suffer modifications as a consequence of changes in the government or as a result of a decision by the managing board throughout a legislature, as in the case of the different vice rectorates.

Regarding the English terms, bearing in mind that there is no gender differentiation in this language, whenever there is more than one form these are synonyms, as in the case of «Director» or «Head», which are both equivalents to the Catalan director, or in the case of «Pro Vice-Chancellor» or «Vice-Rector», which are equivalent to the Catalan word vicerrector. Furthermore, in some specific cases, like in the case of terms related to the teaching staff, the English equivalents are an approximation, as the structures of the universities of the English-speaking countries and those of Spanish universities are not symmetrical.

The terms which have been included in this guide are mostly the ones which have been in use since 2007.

It must be mentioned that this guide will be updated with any new terms which might appear throughout a legislature, although the previous terms won't be removed.
